Flat Fee Structure
Typical Law Firm Billing: Deposits/Retainers
The most common price structure for Family Law attorneys is a deposit, often ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. This money is held in a trust account and as the attorney, paralegal, and secretary work on your case, they bill against the deposited amount at their hourly rate (likely $150 and up). The attorney, paralegal and secretary bill against this amount at their hourly rates until the money is exhausted, then the attorney asks for more money to continue working on your case. The longer they work on your case, the more money they make. And, if you can't afford to keep paying, they withdraw from your case leaving you out of money and without representation.
